What is the storyline of West Side Story?

A musical in which a modern day Romeo and Juliet are involved in New York street gangs. On the harsh streets of the upper west side, two gangs battle for control of the turf. The situation becomes complicated when a gang members falls in love with a rival’s sister.

Maria is a Puerto Rican migrant. She was raised Roman Catholic and continues to pray regularly. Maria is the younger sister of Bernardo, who came to America shortly before her to try and make a better life for himself and their family.

Even though Maria and Tony sleep together, their relationship is constantly surrounded by dreamy words of love, commitment and wedding imagery. … Later, in “A Boy Like That,” Anita warns Maria to stay away from him as he “wants one thing only” and “he’ll kill her love”, like he murdered hers.

Tony dies in Maria’s arms, surrounded by members of both street gangs. Maria grabs Chino’s gun and tells the gang members that they are all responsible for the deaths of Riff, Bernardo, and Tony. The police arrive and arrest Chino while members of the Jets and the Sharks carry Tony’s body away.

Tony dies in Maria’s arms. Maria, now a widow, declares that all the Sharks and the Jets are both responsible for all the deaths because of their hate. The Jets and Sharks at least temporarily put their feud behind them and carry Tony’s body off together.

Bernardo

Tony meets Maria on the fire escape outside her building, and they confirm what we all suspected: they’ve got it for each other bad. They know they’re on opposite sides of this fight, but they don’t care. Love will do that to you.

It turns out that the dress is for the dance, which Maria is attending with Chino, whom she is expected to marry, despite the fact that she does not have any feelings for him. At the dance in the local gym, the group is divided: Jets and their girls on one side and Sharks and their girls on the othe.

The Jewish girl – who eventually became the Puerto Rican Maria in West Side Story – was a holocaust survivor who had immigrated from Israel. The character that eventually became Tony – the Polish-Irish Catholic boy in West Side Story – was an Irish Catholic.
