What is fatalism?

: a doctrine that events are fixed in advance so that human beings are powerless to change them also : a belief in or attitude determined by this doctrine fatalism that regards social problems as simply inevitable.

Being fatalistic means thinking that what is going to happen can’t be changed. Fatalism tends to be associated with a negative, pessimistic, passive outlook. In other words, being fatalistic means having feelings of powerlessness or hopelessness about life.

A fatalist is someone who feels that no matter what he or she does, the outcome will be the same because it’s predetermined. Fatalists share a sense of being powerless to change the world. In philosophy, a fatalist is someone who holds specific beliefs about life, destiny, and the future.

Fatalism can more generally be defined as the propensity of individuals or groups to believe that their destinies are ruled by an unseen power or are played out inevitably rather than by their will. The concept of fatalism has been closely intertwined to the development of religious and philosophical thought./span>

Hard determinism (or metaphysical determinism) is a view on free will which holds that determinism is true, that it is incompatible with free will, and therefore that free will does not exist.

Free will is an illusion. Our wills are simply not of our own making. Thoughts and intentions emerge from background causes of which we are unaware and over which we exert no conscious control. We do not have the freedom we think we have.

If determinism is true, then all of a person’s choices are caused by events and facts outside their control. So, if everything someone does is caused by events and facts outside their control, then they cannot be the ultimate cause of their actions. Therefore, they cannot have free will.

Free will is the idea that we are able to have some choice in how we act and assumes that we are free to choose our behavior, in other words we are self determined. For example, people can make a free choice as to whether to commit a crime or not (unless they are a child or they are insane).

Fate is often conceived as being divinely inspired. Fate is about the present, where every decision an individual has made has led them to their present scenario. However, Destiny is the future scenario, which cannot be determined by decisions an individual will make.
